Okay, quick theory.

The writers have said that those dead are going to stay dead. I think probably they’re trying to to word things carefully so that what they really mean is: “Characters who are ACTUALLY dead at the end will stay dead”, and we’ll learn that the dusted Avengers are still alive, so they were never technically lying. But it did get me thinking.

So if they do really mean the dusted Avengers are for sure dead and will stay dead, while also accepting there’s no possible way they are permanently killing off Spidey, Black Panther, and Strange there’s really only one solution I can think of:

What if, in an alternate universe, the Avengers that got turned to ash in our reality are the ones that survived, and those that lived got turned to ash?

And, ultimately, the way to “fix” what happened is to merge the two realities? That would mean the “original” Avengers we knew are dead and stay dead, but we still have these characters going forward.

Can you imagine if Shuri had successfully extracted the Mind Stone? All of the heartache of Wanda deciding whether she has to kill the man she loves, the Avengers and Wakandans fighting to the death to protect Vision, Vision having to convince Wanda to kill him… All avoided.

Only for Thanos to reverse time, claim the Mind Stone, and have Vision watch Wanda disintegrate before his eyes with a snap.

IW Theory: The Significance of “I Just Feel You”

Right after Civil War,
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely

had an interview talking about Infinity War.

If there is one obvious hint in Civil War at what’s in store with Infinity War,
it’s when Vision says he wishes he could control the infinity stone in
his head. When we spoke with Markus and McFeely, they confirmed Vision’s
line is a tease:

Markus:
That’s the most blatant set up I can think of.

At best, you could say that Vision’s lack of control is significant, yet it’s never pointed out in the movie as such. The Stone is treated more or less the way it has since Age of Ultron–as a distinct entity from Vision.

So if that line is “blatant set up”, where’s the pay off?

Early in the movie, Wanda and Vision share a sweet exchange–Vision is feeling pain from the Stone, feels like it’s almost trying to tell him something. He asks Wanda to see what she feels, and she says–”I just feel you”.

Later Vision will comfort her in his last moments, telling her as she prepares to destroy him, “You could never hurt me. I just feel you.”

Taken at face value, the first is about how Wanda simply doesn’t have the power or experience to sense anything from the Stone. The second is a tragic callback to a happier time.

But taken literally Wanda is telling us (without realizing it herself), is there is just Vision in the Mind Stone. He is the Mind Stone. She could feel anything else because there is nothing else but him.

So Vision’s final words to her take on a new meaning: the Mind Stone only feels her, the woman he loves–even as she destroys him. Vision/the Stone can’t be hurt by Wanda because he knows her, and he knows he loves her.

What does this mean for Avengers 4?

  1. The Mind Stone is the Stone that we’re told seems to think on its own, long before anyone merges it with any sort of consciousness or protocol.
  2. Infinity War shows us the Soul Stone, capable of independent judgement and wisdom.
  3. One of the final scenes is Thanos interacting with Gamora–or something that looks like Gamora–entirely without his own will.
  4. The Gauntlet was damaged.

Taken all together, this means Thanos doesn’t have the Stones subjugated to his will anymore, if he ever fully did. And if Vision is still there–if a part of Vision is still there, then he knows her.

And he could never hurt her.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmHOLY SHIT

FULL ON RAGING INFINITY WAR SPOILERS

The thoughts, all of them!

  • Stuttering, smiley Vision was ADORABLE.
  • There’s got to be a considerable amount of cut content–the leaks from a year ago showed a lot more stuff going on!
  • That movie moved at a breakneck pace
  • Wanda didn’t seem like she had a lot to do, but then again, neither did any of Team Cap. It was mostly the Guardians, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Tony.
  • I just need to watch that Edinburgh scene like 500x
  • S T O L E N  M O M E N T S
  • He loves her!! A lot!!!!
  • There’s no way “I just feel you” is not going to be significant in some way–I’m telling you, Vision’s consciousness has survived within the Mind Stone. He could never hurt her.
  • Obvs Doctor Strange did something. I mean… c’mon. All of the Guardians but Rocket, T’Challa, and Spidey? Well, I guess be shameless about it.
  • They really CGI’d the shit out of that stab wound.
  • Vision had GREAT moments–”We don’t trade lives for lives, Captain”. Honestly probably his most heroic moment.
  • JESUS FUCKING SAD ASS SWELLING MUSIC, SLO MO, “i love you” TRAGEDY
  • I kind of get the sense Vision might stay dead. They killed the guy twice… and we saw his lifeless, colorless corpse. That’s some serious “he’s dead Jim” shit.
  • But then again…. colorless. I wonder if they will try to go WCA Vision…
  • That moment between Thanos and Wanda… damn. That’s some thematic resonance right there.
  • I mean such a breakneck pace. I know it would have been a hard sell, but a half hour more for some slower scenes would have perfected the movie.
  • The amount of deaths really make you question who actually can reasonably stay dead?
  • Also I can’t help but question why they all went to so much effort to save Vision… I mean I guess it’s not very heroic to watch all our heroes try to wheedle someone into killing their soulmate. Still, wish they introduced the concept of Wanda being able to destroy the Stone way later.
  • Also I’d point out that Wanda’s sacrifice being on par with Thanos is pointed out in the narrative, and may therefore be narratively important for A4.

God there’s just so much!! So many thoughts!

I’m still on hiatus but I had a horrible thought and you need to have it too.

So this is definitely Vision pleading with Wanda to go right? Thanos is coming, the Avengers and co. couldn’t stop him, and she should save herself.

But there’s no way Wanda is okay with walking away, letting him die so she can live.

And of them–who truly has the power to stop the other?

So Vision, desperate for Wanda to live, is going to go forward, meet Thanos, and be destroyed.

But Wanda already knows that’s not going to happen. She already knows what she has to do. She takes control of the Mind Stone, and Vision is helpless to stop her. She steps forward.
