I want Wanda and Vision to be like in the comics because I want to see the critics pointing out how abusive this couple is. It will be a fun ride!

I encourage anyone to think critically of the media they consume.

There is no A- or B-list comic book character more than 5 years old that doesn’t have something that many people will find off-putting. There’s no ongoing comic book more than 10 years old that hasn’t gone through rough, perhaps even distasteful, stages.

For some, that might make it difficult to enjoy the medium. I really understand. I’ve gone through years where I drop some of my favorite stories and characters because they’re being handled in a way that makes me unhappy. In order for me to enjoy them again I have to make a conscious decision to accept how they were written but decide it won’t define the character to me. Every comic book fan does.

So for me, I don’t find Wanda and Vision’s relationship (roughly 1970-2002) in the comics abusive. On rare occasions it could be uncomfortable, but it was consistently written positively in my opinion. Post 2002 there are many moments I do not like that arise from both of them. I made a decision to accept this and not let those moments ruin the enjoyment of what I liked.

As for wanting the MCU couple to play out in a way you determine is abusive–if their comic book relationship makes you this angry, and eager for the negative cultural impact of seeing one of the biggest movie events of all time glorify abuse, you should step back. Being invested in hate over a comic book relationship isn’t worth it.

Okay, but imagine how hard it is to be a Historian within the Marvel Universe

magistrate-of-mediocrity:

Magneto: But Wanda! I really -am- you father!
Wanda: B-but that’s impossible! The High Evolutionary said–
Magneto: He only knows half of the story! I stole you back from the High Evolutionary and replaced you with clones from another timeline who are long dead and will in no way come back to confuse things further.
Historian: *furiously erasing everything in a notebook* Oh for fuck sake.

The best possible scenario:

Wanda and Vision have retained most of their personalities and control except specifically when it comes to HYDRA. Vision is unable to fully articulate thoughts that are subversive to HYDRA; Wanda is unable to act on thoughts that are subversive. Otherwise they are aware and the affair they have started is to comfort each other.

This is not ideal, but we can’t change it and at least it’s a scenario where they can be said to each be consenting to the relationship.

The worst possible scenario:

Wanda and Vision are both unable to say no, and Chthon is getting a kick out of torturing them.

No, wait, that’s not the worst–the worst is one of them can’t say no, and the other is taking advantage. That one is the worst.

Please, please, please Marvel–I know I’ve said that you should always fear them getting back together because of the inevitable break-up, but I didn’t realize that you could make me fear the hook-up even more and now I understand I underestimated your awful power so please don’t do this.

“Their transparent lust for one another is so flagrant that it’s almost entertaining.”

So… Is this supposed to be Chthon’s secret love for Vision finally coming out? The panels seem to indicate it’s coming from Wanda, but why would Chthon act on Wanda’s feelings?

10:1 this is because of the movies though. They even dressed her in MCU Wanda’s style.

@those-celestial-bodies@androidavenger Is this something about Secret Empire?? what is going on?!

It’s from the Avengers #10 preview. http://www.cbr.com/exclusive-preview-avengers-10/

This is the first time we’ve seen any hint of personality from either of them. Prior to this they’ve been both silent props in the background, except where Chthon spoke through Wanda.

Yet here it seems to indicate that some of their personalities are intact. I can’t imagine why Chthon would take the time to personally make out with Vision and then some in the Quinjet or why HYDRA installed a “use your vibration settings” mode in Vision.

But this issue is being written by Mark Waid, not Nick Spencer, which may account for some of the differences. Or the higher ups recently mandated they need to get back together because of the movies.

A small observation:

  • Wanda’s first set of parents: Robert Frank1 and Madeline Joyce, both Golden Age superheroes. Robert was still alive, while Madeline had tragically died.
  • Wanda’s second set of parents: Django1 and Marya Maximoff2, turned out to be her adoptive parents. Django was still alive, while Marya had tragically died.
  • Wanda’s third set of parents: Magneto and Magda2. Magneto was, of course, still alive, while Magda had tragically died.
  • Wanda’s fourth set of parents: Father (unknown) and Natalya Maximoff. We don’t know what happened to her father, but he’s probably alive. Natalya, on the other hand, tragically died.

1. Yes, I know Robert and Django ended up dying too (and then there was the whole business with Marya), but the greater point is about who gets to tell the story of Wanda’s lineage and the trend within the origin stories  themselves.

2. Marya and Magda have no maiden names. Madeline only has one because she was a pre-existing character.
