I want Wanda and Vision to be like in the comics because I want to see the critics pointing out how abusive this couple is. It will be a fun ride!

I encourage anyone to think critically of the media they consume.

There is no A- or B-list comic book character more than 5 years old that doesn’t have something that many people will find off-putting. There’s no ongoing comic book more than 10 years old that hasn’t gone through rough, perhaps even distasteful, stages.

For some, that might make it difficult to enjoy the medium. I really understand. I’ve gone through years where I drop some of my favorite stories and characters because they’re being handled in a way that makes me unhappy. In order for me to enjoy them again I have to make a conscious decision to accept how they were written but decide it won’t define the character to me. Every comic book fan does.

So for me, I don’t find Wanda and Vision’s relationship (roughly 1970-2002) in the comics abusive. On rare occasions it could be uncomfortable, but it was consistently written positively in my opinion. Post 2002 there are many moments I do not like that arise from both of them. I made a decision to accept this and not let those moments ruin the enjoyment of what I liked.

As for wanting the MCU couple to play out in a way you determine is abusive–if their comic book relationship makes you this angry, and eager for the negative cultural impact of seeing one of the biggest movie events of all time glorify abuse, you should step back. Being invested in hate over a comic book relationship isn’t worth it.

The best possible scenario:

Wanda and Vision have retained most of their personalities and control except specifically when it comes to HYDRA. Vision is unable to fully articulate thoughts that are subversive to HYDRA; Wanda is unable to act on thoughts that are subversive. Otherwise they are aware and the affair they have started is to comfort each other.

This is not ideal, but we can’t change it and at least it’s a scenario where they can be said to each be consenting to the relationship.

The worst possible scenario:

Wanda and Vision are both unable to say no, and Chthon is getting a kick out of torturing them.

No, wait, that’s not the worst–the worst is one of them can’t say no, and the other is taking advantage. That one is the worst.

Please, please, please Marvel–I know I’ve said that you should always fear them getting back together because of the inevitable break-up, but I didn’t realize that you could make me fear the hook-up even more and now I understand I underestimated your awful power so please don’t do this.

Essential Avengers: Avengers #128: Bewitched, Bothered, and Dead!

thebibliomancer:

October, 1974

This title bothers me. It teased me with alliteration and then yanked it away. But I don’t think there’s a good B word for dead. All the best dead words start with d.

Alas.

So in this issue: imminent death and relationship drama. Disembodied heads may glare at Wanda as the hairy hands of Necrodamus loom menacingly toward her. But probably not.

So the combined Avengers and Fantastic Four team are returning from the wedding of Quicksilver and Crystal (see my previous two posts, true believers! ‘Nuff said!) when nature suddenly gets mad and lightning bolts try to murder them.

Everyone dodges around trying not to get hit by lightning while Thor tries to use his command of the weather to clear things up. It does not work.

Oh and Mantis somehow manages to get in some passive aggression against Scarlet Witch while dodging lightning.

I had such hopes at the start. That she and Wanda would be besties. But it was not to be.

Anyway, in the midst of all this panicked running around and mad electrons, Agatha Harkness (babysitter for Franklin Richards and also an actual witch) stands calm as lightning bolts nearly but do not hit her and with some waving she makes the storm clear.

She explains that the storm was a mystical attack directed at her and that she was expecting it. She didn’t warn anyone because fuck ‘em.

Agatha Harkness is pretty great.
